Yakob Morley is a self taught artist who started painting in 2018 after spending 25 years tattooing. His work centres around paint on wood, canvas, and wood on paint assemblages, drawing inspiration from folk art, photography, crafts, and tattooing. He is particularly drawn to work by other non trained artists finding something honest and immediate in their approach.
Yakob doesn’t have gallery representation, but has managed to make a living through a DIY approach to selling his work. The process of making art drives him more than almost anything and he constantly experiments with new approaches and techniques.
Over the years, he has had the opportunity to collaborate on projects with fashion labels including Something Very Special, Brixton, Zero Skateboards, 5 Boro, and Cootie Productions. He also takes on commission work when it aligns well with his artistic approach.
In February 2024 he had a successful solo show called “Love Notes,” and has several group shows coming up. His philosophy is simple: stay prolific, keep trying new things, analyse what works and what doesn’t, but most importantly always show up to the studio. That consistency is everything.
